 Если интересует именно splash scrren во времф загрузки то в 
 /boot/loader.conf добавляется следующее :
 splash_bmp_load="NO"        # Set this to YES for bmp splash screen!
 splash_pcx_load="YES"       # Set this to YES for pcx splash screen!
 vesa_load="YES"             # Set this to YES to load the vesa module
 bitmap_load="YES"           # Set this to YES if you want splash screen!
 bitmap_name="/boot/splash.pcx"  # Set this to the name of the bmp or pcx 
 file
 bitmap_type="splash_image_data"
 
 У меня нормально грузяться картинки 640x480 - 256 цветов.
