RUSSIAN:
When installing the system, set
Screen CP-866
Keyboard Russian
Console Russian (cons25r instead of cons25 in /etc/ttys)
Scrmap KOI8-r to CP-866
Install the Midnight Commander. Allow 8-bit input.
Install and config the X you like (X.org or XFree86).
Choose the "ru" keyboard. Choose an appropriate group switcher
(I chose "Shift Control changes group")
(Tune the videocard here if needed;
I have Savage 4 Extreme that is "unsupported" and needs special tuning)
Uncomment "nonlatin" in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/rules/xfree86
to enable Russian layout switching.
Add the Cyrillic fontdir in /etc/X11/$config BEFORE all other fontdirs
Then, insert at least
export LC_CTYPE="ru_RU.KOI8-R"
to .xinitrc (or system wide xinitrc file if you don't use .xinitrc)
or add the correct locale (I hate the Russian locale. It's made for the
peroxidated Windows-spoiled Russian-only speaking blonde she-secretaries
only IMHO).
Install the Eterm
in $X/share/Eterm/themes/Eterm/theme.cfg edit fonts and term from, say,
# font 1 6x10
# font 2 fixed
# term_name Eterm
to
font 1 koi6x10
font 2 koi-fixed (NOT koifixed!!!)
term_name xterm-color
Done.
Errors:
1. Midnight Commander does not see Russian texts and filenames.
Ensure the following is in /etc/rc.conf:
font8x14="cp866-8x14"
font8x16="cp866b-8x16"
font8x8="cp866-8x8"
keymap="ru.koi8-r" or "ru.koi8-r.shift" if you like
scrnmap="koi8-r2cp866"
2. Midnight Commander cannot enter Russian letter in command input line but
Error 1 above is absent.
Ensure that full 8-bit input is enabled in Midnight commander config
3. Freshly installed X Xterm does not input ENGLISH letters.
Search for "nonlatin" above.
4. Midnight Commander does not see Russian filenames under Xterm.
Don't bother; install Eterm (See above).
5. Midnight Commander does not see Russian filenames under Eterm.
Check for the presence of cyrillic fontdir in /etc/X11/$config and
the koi* font descriptions in Eterm config
6. I cannot input Russian letters under X. The English letters are input
Check for "ru" keyboard and a proper group switch in /etc/X11/$config file
7. I cannot input Russian letters. But when I press shift/2 I see double
quotes, not @ sign.
Check for export LC_CTYPE="ru_RU.KOI8-R" and/or locale.
8. I hate the Russian console layout.
Look at /usr/share/syscons/keymaps/ru* and /etc/rc.conf
and hack them as you like. ru.koi8-r.shift.kbd may be OK.
9. Console Midnight Commander uses letters instead of pseudographic frames
Look for cons25r instead of cons25 in /etc/ttys
10.The END key doesn't work in Midnight Commander in Eterm
Look for "term_name xterm-color" in Eterm cfg. It helped me and may
help you. The problem lies somewhere between the VT100 emulation,
Eterm and termcap, and I have no time to excavate it.
11.I edit Eterm cfg - nothing changes.
Remove $HOME/.Eterm. Warning! Personal settings will be lost!
12.Russian Mozilla fonts are ugly.
Install xmbdfed from ports and hack them as you like (as I did).
