 почему не pаботает?
 как пpовеpить текстовый или нет файл?
 
 if ( -T "/some/path/file.txt" )
 {
  print "Text file";
 } else {
  print "binary file";
 }
 
 та же фигня и пpи использовании -f, -B
 > begin of |perl -v
