Actually, if you have a normal PC with the big DIN contact to the
keyboard the risk that anything bad happens is very small. (No, I
don't unplug it myself that often, but other people do..)
The PS/2 style contact on the other hand is much more sensitive,
if you are hot-plugin PS/2 style keyboard OR mouse connectors it's
just a question of time before something fries :-)
And you can't trust it to only fry the item that was unplugged either
(hot-plugging the mouse may well fry both mouse and keyboard connector
at the same time, after which it's time to get a new motherboard).

Another possibility is the keyboard/mouse fuse is blown. They are protected
by a small fuse, it use to be labelled as F1 in old AT 486/Pentium 1
motherboards. It is near the keyboard port on the motherboard. In those old
motherboard, it was green many times and looked like a little resistor with
leads into the board. I had a blown one on a 486 motherboard and jumped it
with a fine strand of copper wire wrapped around the two leads. It worked
for ever. I had caused the fuse to blow by shorting the leads putting on a
PS/2 mouse connector (not all pinouts the same back then). Jumping the fuse
means you will fry the board if it ever gets shorted but it is dead anyway
so may as well risk it.

Amen...using those cheap manual switch-boxes used to be okay with those large
DIN connections, but PS/2 style connectors for mouse/keyboard are more
susceptible to damage by the erratic signals produced by manual kvm switches.
Do spend the money and get an electronic kvm switch that basically simulates a
keyboard/mouse signal to each computer all the time and protects from spurious
events that can cause damage to the keyboard, mouse, or even the motherboard's
8042 controller.

You should not plug or unplug PS/2 connectors while the motherboard is
powered. This can damage the motherboard. Modern boards have a poly fuse
to protect the board - it may be that this has blown. However, if this is
the case it would require repair by a technician.

Как видно, все эти авторы сходятся в том, что PS/2 порты более
уязвимы, чем DIN.
